It’s July 2026, and the air outside feels different. Over the last five days, ICE has arrested more than 10,000 people across the country. For many in our community, this isn't just a news headline or a political debate. It’s a knock on the door. It’s a vacant chair at the dinner table. It’s the sound of a car idling outside at 5:00 AM that makes your heart race.
I’m Rodrego Way, Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor, and I see the toll this takes. When the law starts making people feel like they don't belong in their own neighborhoods, the trauma doesn't just stay with the person being detained. It ripples out through families, schools, and entire blocks. We are living through a storm of political stress and BIPOC trauma that demands more than just "coping": it demands a survival strategy for the soul.
The Psychological Weight of the "Knock"
Living in a mixed-status household or a targeted community means living in a state of constant hypervigilance. Psychologically, this is exhausting. When you are always looking over your shoulder, your nervous system is stuck in "fight or flight" mode. This is what we call ICE deportation mental health impact.
It’s not just about the fear of being taken; it’s about the "what if."
- What if I don’t come home from work?
- What if my partner is taken while I’m at the grocery store?
- Who will pick up the kids?
This chronic uncertainty leads to what researchers call toxic stress. For men of color, this can manifest as increased irritability, isolation, or a feeling of helplessness that is hard to shake. We often carry an "invisible burden," trying to be the rock for our families while our own foundations are shaking. If you’ve been feeling like the weight is getting too heavy, you might recognize some of these 10 signs that therapy could help.

Family Separation and the Next Generation
The hardest part of this storm is often what it does to our youth. Adolescents in immigrant families are navigating a unique kind of family separation anxiety. They aren't just worried about their own futures; they are acting as emotional guards for their parents.
When a teen sees their community being targeted, their sense of safety is shattered. We see it in grades dropping, kids withdrawing from friends, or a sudden, intense anger. This is why adolescent therapy is so critical right now. They need a space where they don't have to be the "strong one" or the translator for their parents' fears. They need to just be kids.
Historical Trauma: The Long Shadow
It’s important to acknowledge that this isn't the first time our communities have been told we don’t belong. Whether it’s the history of exclusion acts, the systemic displacement of Black and Brown bodies, or the current enforcement surges, this is historical trauma.
The fear you feel today is often layered on top of the stories your grandparents told you. It’s an intergenerational wound. Understanding the difference between historical trauma and personal trauma is the first step in realizing that your reaction isn't "crazy": it’s a calculated response to a long history of instability.
Grounding Strategies When the World Feels Unstable
When the external world is in chaos, we have to find ways to steady our internal world. Grounding isn't about ignoring the reality of ICE raids; it’s about making sure your mind is sharp and your heart is resilient enough to handle whatever comes.
- The 5-4-3-2-1 Technique: In moments of high anxiety, stop and name 5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste. This pulls your brain out of the "future-fear" and back into the present moment.
- Control the Controllables: You can't control federal policy, but you can control your "Know Your Rights" plan. Having a plan for who calls whom if an emergency happens can actually lower your baseline anxiety because you’ve moved from "passive victim" to "active participant."
- Digital Detox: The 24-hour news cycle and social media can be trauma-triggering. Set specific times to check for updates, and then put the phone away.
- Connect with the Earth: Sometimes, just putting your hands in soil or holding something natural can remind you that you are part of something much older and more permanent than a temporary law.

Community Trauma Recovery: Healing Together
Healing from community trauma recovery doesn't happen in isolation. One of the most damaging things about immigration enforcement is how it forces people into the shadows. We stop going to the park. We stop talking to the neighbors. We isolate to stay "safe," but isolation is where trauma thrives.
We have to find ways to rebuild our "village." This might mean joining a community garden, attending a local support group, or simply checking in on the family down the street. When we share our stories, we take the power away from the fear. We’ve seen how community-based trauma recovery can transform a neighborhood from a place of fear into a place of triumph.

A Message for Our Men
To the men of color who are leading families through this: I see you. You are carrying the weight of being a provider, a protector, and a target all at once. It’s okay to acknowledge that this is hard. It’s okay to seek a space where you can let the mask slip.
The Mind and Therapy Clinic was built for this. We specialize in transforming trauma into triumph, specifically for those of us who have been told by the world that our presence is a problem. You are not a problem. You are a vital part of this community, and your mental health is your greatest asset.
Standing Tall in the Storm
As we navigate the rest of this month and the ongoing shifts in our political landscape, remember that your worth is not defined by a visa status or a court ruling. You belong here because you are here. Your history, your culture, and your resilience are things no one can deport.

If the weight of the world feels like it’s crushing your spirit, don’t wait for the storm to pass before you seek help. Let's work on your trauma recovery journey together.
